5.26.2020 - Couple things to share this week -

- This Wednesday (5.27), and Thursday (5.28) from 11:00 - 2:00 please drop off school owned items (textbooks, uniforms, etc.). This is NOT a pick-up time for items from students lockers. I was informed that the time for that would be coming in the following couple weeks. Please label the item being dropped off for accountability purposes. NO NEED TO DROP OFF ELECTRONICS. Please keep using them. The school will collect those later.

- Opportunities to raise your grade for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd nine weeks are coming to an end very soon! I was informed that this Thursday grades for the third nine weeks will be reposted. Very quickly thereafter, dates will be set for the 2nd and 1st nine weeks to be reposted. Those of you completing assignments in Khan Academy will see a boost to your nine weeks grades. You will see the assignment(s) in the grade book as extra credit and will earn a 100 for the score. Those of you that did not complete that particular assignment will see an EX (excused) score that will not affect your existing grade in any way.

This week the review in Khan Academy covers the Bill of Rights. The assignments are short videos that cover each of the amendments, giving a comprehensive overview of each one. There's only ten...check them out if you'd like. Once again all review is optional.

Once again if you have any questions about anything please continue to reach out. I'll do my best to answer what I can. That's it. Take care.

5.18.2020 - This week in Khan Academy is all about the Constitution. Only 8 sections this week! Starting with the Preamble and going through each of the seven Articles, this week's assignment focuses on the document that outlines the powers of the United States government. What were the goals of the Preamble? Do you remember which Article outlined the powers of the Executive branch? The Judicial Branch? The Legislative branch? This section in Khan Academy covers everything we covered in class plus a little more for those of you looking to delve in to the U.S. Constitution a little further.

Once again all review is optional, but it is a great way to go over everything we covered this year. All previously assigned sections stay "open" as well meaning you can work on anything listed at any time, in any order. Do what you want, when you want.

Please continue to email me with any concerns, questions, or just to say hi! Miss you guys.

5.11.2020 - This week in Khan Academy I'm posting a set of videos by CBS's John Dickerson. Each one answers a who, what, why question such as - Why study U.S. history, government and civics? Why does your vote matter? What was the Articles of Confederation? Why was George Washington the first president? Each video is very short and this section has no quizzes or tests! If you have some extra time and want to check out these short videos please do.

5.4.2020 - I'm going to be posting another section for review in Khan Academy this week - Political Participation. This section is big! Voting rights, voter turnout, political parties, third parties, interest groups, lobbying, the electoral college (electing the President; 2020 is an election year), campaign finance, and the media.

When you log in to Khan Academy there are a lot of different sections listed. It can look a little overwhelming, but each activity is short (5-10 minutes/5-10 questions). For those of you checking some of the review out, keep it up. If you haven't logged in yet, please do! Grades are due tomorrow. I will be posting the grades earned from the third nine weeks. The optional review work from now until school is out will all be added to your final year grade. Based on the effort that you put in to the review, your grade will be boosted accordingly. Remember, all work is optional. Work on it when you can, and get as much done as you can.

This week I am assigning American Political Ideologies and Beliefs in Khan Academy. This section gets in to the ideas, beliefs, values, and opinions held by the individuals that participate in government. This is the political "line" we talked about in class...Liberalism on the left, Conservatism on the right, and all sorts of beliefs in the middle and at the extremes. Shout out this week goes to Veronica, Renee, and Richard.  Keep up the great work! For those of you that haven't signed up please do so.  Khan Academy is a great resource to continue to review the things we covered this year.

Please continue to email me with any concerns, questions, or just to say hi! Miss you guys.

4.20.2020 - We are continuing to review material in Khan Academy, If you haven't already signed up please do so.  The material is wonderful review of what we did this year. Shout out to all of you who have signed up and are making it through some of the activities. Special shout out to Ann, Sami, and Cristian...great job!

I'm assigning a new Unit this week - Civil Liberties and Civil Rights. It reviews the Bill of Rights, focusing on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th amendments. Due process is also covered; there are two sections - one on rights of the accused, the other on your right to privacy. Lastly, it reviews the 14th amendment and gets in to the Supreme Court Case, Brown v. Board of Education.

As always, everything is optional. Khan Academy is a great way to review the material we covered this year while earning some extra credit. Feel free to contact me through email with questions and concerns. Miss you guys.

4.14.2020 - Hope this update finds everyone and their families well.  A new distance learning schedule was recently sent out by our administration through email.  While the schedule has Social Studies meeting Wednesday and Thursday mornings, know that I will continue to be available through email each day of the week to try and answer any questions. Each of the resources below can be accessed at any time. Do as many of the activities as you can whenever you can. Some of the earlier activities I posted are still great resources to check out, but I want to also use this opportunity to offer one more - Khan's Academy.  I signed our classes up yesterday. To access Khan's Academy login to Microsoft Office using your school account. Access Khan's Academy through the Clever App. Below you will find the code for your specific class -

          Core 3 - V5KMW6W8
          Core 4 - R3AQUFNR
          Core 5 - 6V56YU9Q
          Core 6 - XAY8KUCB

Once you enroll in your class, I can assign some activities for you to review. The great thing about Khan's Academy is that I can track your progress.  All work at the moment is optional so what you complete will be extra credit.  This extra credit can be applied to your current grade to increase your current score.

On another note, I never got the chance to share...our family welcomed Lenna Makenzie on March 11! She's doing great...eating...sleeping...pooping...repeat... Can't believe its already been a month!!! Brayden and Callie seem to think she's pretty cool...for now :)

Lastly, I wish today I was reminding you that our SOL is in two weeks :)  I wish we were catching up about how are spring breaks were. I wish I was sharing some dumb story about something that doesn't matter while trying to teach you about government. You know if we were in class I'd just keep talking so I'll stop typing...miss you guys.
